Well written novels, movies and TV series are hard enough to find, much less a well written and designed Anime. Not only does the series have an intriguing plot that holds very well together, but also a plethora of hidden meanings and themes. The story explores many issues pertaining to human nature, especially regarding our insatiable hunger for knowledge and power. These themes were extremely well reflected through the major characters' dilemmas, internal conflicts and fantasies. In contrast to most Anime which features less believable perfect heroes, each charater has their imperfection(s). In the end, this story leaves the audience with more questions than answers. Like reality, life is full of unanswered questions. We can only get closer to the answer, yet never find an answer that can quite completely satisfy us.
In year 2000, a catastrophic event known as the Second Impact took out half the world's population and melted all the ice in Antarctica. According to the UN, it was a giant meteorite, but there were many rumors that said otherwise.
It is now year 2015. Mysterious entities called Angels started appearing, causing mayhem to the remaining population. All conventional weapons proved useless against them, including the UN's key weapon, the N2 bomb because an AT Field (Absolute Terror Field) protects the Angels. On the surface, the series may seem to be just another group of pilots and their mecha battling evil. Underneath the many seemingly abstract and irrelevant soliloquy of the characters lie many biblical and religious references which challenges the traditional school of thought. Even the traditional image of God was under fire.
When Nagisa Kaoru arrived, he made multiple references to Lilith. After examining the various mythos behind Lilith, I have derived one possible symbol for Lilith.

The only weapon that can penetrate the AT Field is called the EVA, which is developed by an organization called NERV. EVAs are biologically based giant humanoids, which requires the control of a pilot by synchronizing the pilot's mind with it. Thus, the pilot's senses extend into the EVA unit. Every thought, feeling and action is automatically executed by the EVA (and vice versa!!) Only a select group of children born after the Second Impact have the capability to synch with an EVA.
